Dresden-based AMAREA Technology GmbH has been honoured with the 2026 TCT Hardware Award in the “Non-Polymer Systems” category at RAPID + TCT in Boston. The award went to the MMJ ProX series, an industrial multi-material 3D printer for the additive manufacturing of functionalised high-performance components made from metals, ceramics, glass and composite materials. As an engineering partner, esmo automation supported the Dresden start-up in mechanical integration, system manufacturing and industrialisation of the innovative printing systems.
The TCT Awards jury recognised the MMJ ProX series as “a highly innovative approach that could create new market opportunities for metal material jetting technologies The award also recognizes the joint efforts of AMAREA Technology and its project partners Fraunhofer IKTS and esmo AG.
Multi-Material Jetting: Up to Six Materials in a Single Component
The MMJ ProX series is based on a droplet-based multi-material jetting process in which highly filled feedstocks with metal and ceramic powders are precisely deposited layer by layer. This enables up to six different materials to be combined within a single component – a technology that makes functional gradients and complex internal structures possible. Applications range from aerospace and medical technology through to the electronics and energy industries.
esmo automation: Engineering Expertise for Complex Automation Solutions
esmo automation, part of the esmo Group headquartered in Rosenheim and Raubling, contributed its many years of expertise in special-purpose machinery and automation technology to the project. “We supported AMAREA in mechanical integration and system manufacturing of the first two 3D printers and continue to assist the start-up on its path towards series production,” the company explains. In particular, the handling technology inside the printer benefits from the experience of esmo’s engineers in developing precise motion and positioning systems.
The partnership between AMAREA and esmo automation has been in place for around two and a half years. In addition to its support in Germany, esmo Asia North is active as a partner for the Chinese market. “We maintain close contact and direct exchange with AMAREA. It is an exciting project where innovative printing technology meets robust automation solutions,” says esmo automation.
From Research to Industry
AMAREA Technology is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS. The founders developed MMJ technology at the institute and are now bringing it to market maturity with the support of experienced engineering partners such as esmo automation. The MMJ ProX series features a modular design and is engineered for reliable industrial use – from prototype development through to series production.
The TCT Hardware Award is presented annually at RAPID + TCT, one of the world’s leading trade shows for additive manufacturing. The award recognises outstanding innovations in the 3D printing industry.
