Sustainability at esmo AG

Technology with responsibility

Sustainability is not a distant goal for us – it’s a continuous process that began years ago. We see the implementation of our quality and environmental standards as an investment in the future – both for our company and for society as a whole.

As a mechanical engineering company, we work with resource-intensive products and materials in some areas. This makes it all the more important for us to stay true to our principles and pursue innovative paths – in harmony with people and the environment, today and in the future.

In recent years, we’ve achieved measurable results based on our sustainability strategy, which we summarize briefly on this page. No single area is more important than the others – all measures are interconnected. Every contribution to environmental protection counts and supports our shared goal.

Reducing our CO₂ footprint

Responsible use of natural resources is a core part of our corporate philosophy. One of our key goals in this area is to reduce our CO₂ emissions.

In 2020, we defined a clear target: By 2030, we aim to reduce our CO₂ emissions by at least 30% compared to the baseline year.

It’s an ambitious, yet achievable goal that we are pursuing step by step through specific measures.

By 2023, we had already achieved a 5% reduction. In 2024, we significantly increased this figure. We are currently at around 10% – and fully on track. We are confident that we will meet – or even exceed – our 30% reduction target by 2030.

Our progress is based on a package of coordinated actions: improving energy efficiency, expanding digital processes, investing in sustainable technologies, and carefully selecting and managing our supply chains. Because one thing is certain: sustainability is not an option – it is a business responsibility.

Photovoltaics + e-mobility: sustainable energy for tomorrow

The shift to renewable energy is a key component of our sustainability strategy. Today, we already generate a significant portion of our electricity from in-house photovoltaic systems covering around 800 m² on the rooftops of our production and office buildings. Our goal is clear: by 2030, 80% of our energy should come from renewable sources.

In 2023, we already reached 63%. In 2024, we increased that share to 69% – a clear step forward. But the solar power we generate doesn’t just power our facilities. We also offer it to our employees at low cost for charging their electric vehicles.

The next step is just around the corner: our pool vehicles will also be gradually converted to electric mobility – another contribution to CO₂ reduction and a clear commitment to sustainable technologies.

Water treatment as part of industrial efficiency

The responsible use of water is another core aspect of our environmental strategy. Our goal: by 2030, 90% of our wastewater should be recycled – through effective treatment and reintegration into the cycle.

In 2023, our recycling rate was already 85%, and in 2024 we reached 86%. We are getting very close to our target.

Thanks to intelligent system concepts and process-integrated water management, we have significantly reduced our fresh water consumption – only using what is truly necessary. A meaningful contribution to preserving the vital resource of water.

Keeping valuable resources in the loop

In mechanical engineering, waste is unavoidable – including valuable and sometimes rare metals. Recycling these materials is not only environmentally responsible, but also makes economic sense. That’s where we come in: by 2030, we aim to fully recycle 90% of our waste.

We already achieved 83% in 2023 and 85% in 2024 – and the trend continues upward.

For us, recycling is about more than just environmental protection. It helps raise awareness among our employees in how to use materials efficiently and supports our goal of a responsible, resource-conscious circular economy.

Environmental management to international standards

Environmental responsibility and safe working conditions for all employees are integral parts of our corporate strategy. At each of our sites, we rely on clearly defined processes that enable responsible operations – for both the environment and society.

We align our practices with internationally recognized standards such as DIN EN ISO 14001 for environmental management and DIN ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. Our Shanghai facility is already certified according to these standards – independently verified by TÜV Süd.

If required, equivalent certifications can also be initiated at other locations. In this way, we bridge the gap between individual customer needs and our commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices.

Health & safety as part of our sustainability commitment

The health and well-being of our employees are a core element of our sustainability strategy. A safe and healthy workplace is not an option for us – it’s a given, at all our locations worldwide.

We rely on clear structures, regular training, and preventive measures to identify and minimize risks early. In doing so, we follow internationally recognized standards such as DIN ISO 45001 and the guidelines of the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA).

Our commitment to workplace safety and health is also anchored in the esmo Code of Conduct. Because for us, sustainability starts with people – with responsibility, respect, and care in the daily working environment.
